The New Evangelization in a Digital World: What JPII Knew Before We Did

“Do not be afraid.” — St. John Paul II

He may not have been talking about Instagram stories or YouTube Shorts, but JPII’s prophetic call to take the Gospel beyond the church walls now sounds a lot like a prompt to log in.

The New Evangelization wasn’t about inventing a new Gospel—but about finding new zeal, methods, and audiences. He saw that the Church needed to re-evangelize the baptized. Not just go wider—but go deeper. And while he may not have foreseen TikTok, he absolutely foresaw the need to meet people in the culture.

Today, that means showing up—intentionally—online.

What Is the New Evangelization, Anyway?

JPII first used the phrase in the 1980s, calling Catholics to reignite the flame of faith in places where it had burned low. Europe. The U.S. Your cousin’s group chat. You know, the post-Christian world.

This new evangelization would be:

  • New in ardor: more passionate, joyful, and courageous

  • New in methods: embracing creativity, media, and technology

  • New in expression: using the language of the time

Translation for today: You don’t have to be an influencer. But you do have to be present.

What the Digital World Has to Do With It

Let’s be honest: when the world scrolls more than it speaks, we’re called to bring the Gospel to the scroll.

  • Instagram is the new Areopagus.

  • Your email newsletter is a modern-day epistle.

  • Your website may be someone’s first encounter with the Church.

Digital platforms aren’t distractions from the mission. They’re the front lines.

And that’s true whether you’re a parish, school, bookstore, apostolate, or just a mission-minded Catholic business trying to live the faith out loud. If your work is good, beautiful, and true—it belongs out there.

How You Can Be Part of the New Evangelization

No pulpit? No problem. You have pixels. And a mission.

Here’s how to start:

  • Show up with purpose—Your brand is your witness.

  • Share stories, not just slogans—People remember humans, not taglines.

  • Post with clarity—Confused content won’t evangelize anyone.

  • Value community over virality—The Kingdom isn’t built on trends.

You don’t need to be the loudest voice in the feed. Just a faithful one.

JPII Would Totally Be on YouTube

He’d be preaching in 4K, quoting Scripture, and reminding us to “Be not afraid” of digital culture. Because it’s not about being flashy—it’s about being faithful where people are already gathered.

And these days? That gathering is online.
