Photo + Video Tips for Non-Designers (That Actually Work)

Not everyone has a Canva Pro subscription and a background in visual arts—and that’s okay.
But in a world dominated by Instagram, Reels, YouTube Shorts, and the ever-scrolling feed, visual content matters. A lot.

Here’s the good news: you don’t need to be a designer, videographer, or even particularly “creative” to create beautiful, effective content.

You just need a few simple rules—and a willingness to press publish before everything feels perfect.

Photo Tips for Non-Designers

1. Use Natural Light Whenever You Can

Nothing beats a well-lit photo. If you’re indoors, take your photo near a window. If you’re outdoors, aim for “golden hour” (early morning or late afternoon) to avoid harsh shadows.

2. Clean Your Lens

It sounds silly, but a quick lens wipe can instantly upgrade your photo quality. Smudges = blurry content.

3. Use the Rule of Thirds

Most phones have a grid setting—turn it on. Place your subject off-center for a more professional look.

4. Keep Backgrounds Simple

A cluttered background distracts. Use a neutral wall, clean table, or open space. For products, try a foam board or linen cloth as your base.

5. Take Multiple Shots

Don’t settle for one click. Try different angles—top-down, straight-on, side view. You’ll thank yourself later.

Video Tips for Non-Designers

1. Good Audio > Fancy Camera

People will forgive a grainy video, but not bad sound. Use headphones with a mic, film in a quiet space, and avoid wind or echo.

2. Don’t Overthink Editing

You don’t need Final Cut Pro. Most of our clients use:

  • CapCut (free and easy)

  • InShot

  • Instagram Reels editor

Use the built-in templates and let the tools do the heavy lifting.

3. Film Vertically

Unless you're producing for YouTube, keep it vertical. It’s how people consume content now on IG, FB, and TikTok.

4. Keep It Short + Snappy

Attention spans are short. Aim for 15–30 seconds for most social videos. Even better: hook your viewer in the first 3 seconds.

5. Use Captions

Many people watch with the sound off—so adding captions is non-negotiable. Tools like CapCut and Clipscribe make it easy.

Bonus Tips for Better Visual Content

  • Use Consistent Brand Colors: Even if you're using phone photos, pop them into Canva and overlay your brand color palette for consistency.

  • Templates Save Lives: Create a few go-to templates for posts or stories. This keeps things looking polished even on busy days.

  • Batch It: Take a bunch of photos/videos at once, especially if you're dressed and ready. Schedule content later.

You don’t need to go to art school to create social media content that connects.
You just need to know what works—and give yourself permission to show up, imperfectly.

With these simple tips, you’ll be able to create scroll-stopping photos and videos that reflect your mission, elevate your message, and reach the people who need your work the most.
